What does MHRD mean?

MHRD is the short form for the Ministry for Human Resource Development. Currently known as the Ministry of Education, MHRD is a ministry under the Union Government of India overlooking the educational matters of the country. The department was known as MHRD from 1985 to 2020. When the NDA government brought the National Education Policy in 2020, the ministry was renamed back to the Ministry of Education.

Divisions of MHRD

The Ministry has been further divided into two further sub-departments:

• Department of School Education and Literacy – the department deals with the development of primary and secondary education, adult education and literacy. The goal is to provide education to all to pave the way for a better India.
• Department of Higher Education – the department looks after the higher education sector in the country which is one of the largest in the world. The primary goal is to provide higher education opportunities to the students and make sure that they are at par with the international standards.

The National Education Policy (NEP)

On July 29, 2020, the Union Government passed the National Education Policy which replaced the existing National Policy on Education, 1986. The policy aimed at revamping the educational system in the country. It will provide more opportunities to everyone and carry forward a new look to education in India. For this, the policy stated the establishment of various educational institutions, governing bodies for the suitable implementation of the provisions in NEP.
