TNEB, the abbreviation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, is one of the power generation & distribution-related companies, the owner of which is none other than the government of Tamil Nadu (in India) itself.
The company is a regulated monopoly that was made under the 2003 Electricity Act (Section 131). The electricity board has a large number of consumers and thus it is considered as the country’s largest SEB ( State Electricity Board).
History of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board:
Tamil Nadu Electricity Board had its origin on 1st July 1957 as MSEB (Madras State Electricity Board), under the Department Of Power’s authority (as per the 1948 Electricity Supply Act).
It is given the responsibility for electricity generation, regulation of state electric supply, distribution & transmission by the government. The name of Madras State Electricity Board was later changed to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.
TNEB, in October 2008, according to the Tamil Nadu government’s decision, got divided into 2 subsidiaries. Again, on 1st November 2010, it gained the status of a holding company, that had 2 subsidiaries with it.
The two subsidiaries of TNEB are TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation & Distribution Corporation Limited) & TANTRANSCO (Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited). Among them, TANGEDCO got the responsibility for power generation & TANTRANSCO got the responsibility for power transmission.
